Aberdeenshire Film Office works with key partners to help ensure that film and TV productions in the region are inclusive and accessible to people from underrepresented backgrounds. These partnerships provide pathways into the industry for individuals who might otherwise face barriers, from signposting experienced professionals to facilitating meaningful, hands-on experiences for young people on set.
shmu
We work in partnership with shmu (Station House Media Unit), a leading community media organisation based in Aberdeen with over twenty years’ experience in using media as a tool for social change. shmu supports individuals and communities across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire – particularly those who are marginalised or harder to reach – by delivering high-quality screen education and production opportunities at every level, from introductory workshops to industry-recognised training.
Each year, shmu supports over 150 young people through programmes including the Foundation Apprenticeship in Creative and Digital Media, the NPA in Film & Media, and the BFI Film Academy, alongside wider engagement in schools and communities.
Together, Aberdeenshire Film Office and shmu have developed a programme that enables productions to include young people on set in meaningful ways – from educational set visits and crew-led workshops to paid traineeships. shmu can provide end-to-end delivery, including recruitment, contracting, participant support, payroll, and evaluation – to ensure a professional, supported and inclusive experience.

We Are Here Scotland raises the voices of Black People and Global Majority artists and creatives across Scotland and creates work opportunities for them. They manage a searchable database of Black and Global Majority workers such as actors, creative producers and videographers by location. We strongly support their recommendation to pay workers fairly. Unpaid and tokenistic inclusion is not a helpful way to drive inclusion in this sector.
